Thursday's Thing*

The Pepper Grinder.

A simple thing to appreciate.
We got it this on our honeymoon on Martha's Vineyard, over 18 years ago.  We were young and had almost no money but we stayed at a B & B and dined very well each night.  Days were spent looking for the quietest beaches, going on sailboat rides, eating baked goods, bead and music shopping (what?! I was a newlywed, but I was still ME!), browsing through the book barn, grabbing the brass ring on the carousel, blowing bubbles and watching the kayakers laughing and wondering where they came from, bowling, lounging, going to a winery.....
We got the grinder at the winery.  It was pretty stinkin' expensive for what it is, but we figured it was vacation and we really wanted a grinder.  I think we saw it as our first step to being grownups.  A peppercorn grinder.  Woo Hoo.  We had arrived.
It floats back and forth between the dining room and the kitchen.  Each time I am out shopping, I want to buy another one so we can have one on in both places.  And I find ones that I are more pleasing to the eye, but they don't have the history of this one.  So I don't buy them.  Each day when we grind, we silently remember who we were then and see how far we have come.  Honeymoon love...daily love......

*Appreciate what you have.  Want for less...unless it is beads or music.

What a wonderful story! It is funny how an object can have so many memories attached to it. I say just stick with the one...it is more special that way. :)

Your story is so heartwarming! It's little things like a pepper grinder that make the memories that we hold dear. Enjoy your grinder for many, many more years. It tells the story each time you use it.

What a lovely post. My Dad does not need anything that I could afford to buy. Years ago I stopped giving him gifts - I do not get much either. One Christmas season I saw a pepper grinder at Target and bought it for my him. I had not bought him a gift in years. He loves pepper. He had no idea of what was under the wrap. It was perfect. He still appreciates it. I love the fact that I was able to give him something he can appreciate for more than the fact that it came from me.

What a sweet, sweet story! I have many ordinary object'd'art (crap) around my house that is more special to me than any thing of real value...except when I have to dust it! Seriously - there are certain objects that make me stop in my tracks and brings back wonderful memories! I have a carved piece of jade from San Francisco - the best vacation I ever experienced (in the 90's). It's small, its' cheap, probably not even real jade -- it actually has a chip in it. But it is priceless. Pepper on!

It's always so important to remember where we started a journey, because that lets us see how far we have come. May that pepper grinder bless a continued happy life for you and Bird Man for many more years to come!

Hi Christine,
This is a beautiful story of a new pepper grinder to mark the beginning of a new life. Eighteen years later both are still going strong a little wear here and there, but still working. Enjoy the pepper grinder for many more years to come. Keep a smile on your face and in heart every time you grind those little pepper corns.

Things are important! Love the story of your honeymoon. Sounds pretty darn perfect to me. We've got an olive oil pourer that we bought from a potter at her studio many moons ago that has similar meaning to us. It's chipped now, but we can't use it without thinking of how wonderful and carefree a trip it was.

what a great memory! items you end up using everyday that remind you of a place, time or person are the best! And now I know why you were looking at all those pepper grinders, but did not buy one! ha!
