.....was.....

This week's .....was..... is not a big mystery.  It is what remains of Fort Hancock on Sandy Hook in New Jersey.   I was there a month ago, visiting an old, dear friend, collecting rocks, shells, glass, and driftwood...and a few abandoned photos.

oh this brings back so many memories. There is an old battery near where I grew up. We used to climb the old fort and run through the empty rooms below. We yell and listen for the echo throughout the abandoned fort.

There is a significance to the one near my home town. It was one of the only places in the US to be fired on by a foreign power since the war of 1812. My parents tell me that they had 'lights out' on the coast so the Japanese could not tell what to fire on... and seemed to work with this fort as they never knew the cannon power of its guns.

This is Battery Russell

Cynthia beat me to it. I was going to mention that I visited Fort Stevens this summer, which is exactly what she is talking about. It felt a bit eerie looking at your pictures, how uncanny you would do a post on an abandoned fort!

The Fort looks so sad but also quite cool how the concrete and iron continue to remain. Although I have an extreme dislike of war I do enjoy visiting old forts since it is an interesting part of our country's history.
