Thursday's Thing*

Mama's Vase.

My aunt is a potter.  She gave me this itty bitty vase years ago.  It is perfect for me.  My house is so small so there are not a lot of places to put big vases full of flowers.  I had  my thyroid removed 4 years ago and I turned 40 the same week---I was living in a florist!  It was really nice and a bit magical for a couple weeks, but for regular livin', gimme small!

When the kids were toddlers and giving me dandelions and buttercups all spring and summer, I put them in this vase.  I keep it on the window sill at the kitchen sink.  I always have and I always will.  Now that they are getting bigger, they pick me mini-bouquets.  I just love the hand selected, yard grown wildflowers and weeds.  And I really enjoy the beauty they see in the late fall.  This flower may be dead, but they still thought it was pretty enough for the Mama's Vase.

I am thoroughly enjoying posting on Thursdays, for so many reasons.  But the pleasure I didn't realize I would receive is hearing how these little posts are opening up a flood of memories for you all.   I set out to do something for myself with these Thurday posts, and somehow it becomes about something less selfish.  What a joy to hear your comments and then continue with e-mail conversations.  We are all connected in these tiny ways and it is truly a sweet sweet thing.

Such a beautiful memory with an equally gorgeous vase, Christine! I am slowly getting some of my 'heirloom' pieces when mom sends me packages from Europe. I, too, have a small house, but tons of vases and they are almost always busy holding some thing or another :) And you're right: a flower picked by small hands is always precious! Enjoy!!

I like 'Mama's little vase' so sweet! Annie likes to pick the little violets out in the grass and she'll bring me in a fistful just perfect for a vase like this! I love the wild flowers up at camp ... my favorite being Indian Paint Brush! all weeds, but darn pretty ones!

Wonderful post Christine and you reminded me of something. I love flowers especially fresh picked flowers. My grandparents and a huge garden and my Nanny grew all kinds of flowers but my favorite sweet peas, I used to love to smell them but also pick big batches to take home. Nothing smells better than fresh sweet peas. Another story I used to be a flower thief on my way to school, I walked 8 blocks each way and along my path were beautiful lilacs and peonies and I couldn't resist picking them for my teacher or my mom. I am always surprised that I never got into trouble for my little problem.

Thank you for sharing, I love your vase! Anything that is make by a potter's hands is wonderful!@

I am so enjoying your posts too Christine. Having just moved into a smaller home, I am with you on liking it better. I still have too much "stuff" but the things I adore are the cherished rocker and dining hutch I got from my grandmother. I don't need them and they are not worth much but they mean the world to me. Like your little vase, it is the memories we have attached to these treasures that are so precious. Love your Thursday things!

Awww! The dead flowers are really sweet in the vase. Kids are so kind and thoughtful when they pick flowers for their mom! That makes for such perfect memories.

What a memento you have... I always believe objects carry some energy of the person who owned the item...
